Eclipse!

Our Oma Judy lives in Waco and the solar eclipse's path of totality was going to pass right through town.  It was a chance we couldn't pass up.  We loaded the kids and drove from Chandler to Waco in ONE DAY!  It was a long day.  Kids did great considering.  We had plenty of snacks and made lots of stops.

We arrived late Friday night and were able to watch General Conference with Oma that weekend.  Oma was thrilled to get some good cuddle time with Lauren.  Wesley was enamored with the chickens.  Those two birds have never been so cared for before.  He fed them more than regularly, played chase (not sure if the chickens liked that), made up their beds for an afternoon nap and for bed, and checked regularly for eggs.  By the time we left, those chickens were eating out of Wesley's hand.
Clouds and thunderstorms were forecasted the day of the eclipse but the weather cooperated.  There were clouds, but the sky cleared during totality.  It was pretty cool to watch and share the event with Oma.
After, we loaded the car, said our goodbyes, and headed west.   We camped for the night in a cute little cabin at a Texas state park.  The kids were so excited to be in the cabin.  It was perfect.  I was glad for solid walls too when the wind picked up fiercely in the morning and loud thunder threatened rain.

The next day we headed for Carlsbad Caverns National Park.  I'd been talking up the cave to the kids for a week or so, hoping to make it fun and not terrifying.  It was so good to visit an old park I'd worked at.  Wesley and I walked into the natural entrance together.  I'd forgotten just how big and beautiful that cave is.  The kids did great and did not get scared.  Bored, yes, but thankfully we only had about a ten minute walk to the elevator back up to the visitor center.

We drove into El Paso where we had dinner at a park with a very dear friend of mine from graduate school.  So good to catch-up though we could have used another two hours.  We loaded up one last time and hauled it back home.  I love family adventures!
